I'm done and dusted with eBay for the year.
I bunged a load of 2nd edition Ork models up for auction as well as a new Ghazghkull model. Everything exceeded my expectations and brought in far more than I had expected. Altogether I made £83.79.
That means my final NMF for the year stands at £842.98.
I'm over the moon at the final total, which has obliterated my original target of £500. Roll on 2010!

NEW MODEL FUND: Target acquired!
Just over a week ago I listed some of my unwanted models on eBay. The auctions included the Imperial Guard special character Captain Al'rahem, a Tanith Command squad including Corbec, Dorden, Milo, Larkin, and a plasma gunner, a limited edition Inquisitor Gideon Lorr model and a fully painted Goblin Blood Bowl Team including Ripper Bolgrot and three secret weapons.
I hoped these models would pull in about £50. In the event I almost doubled that and received £94.90. Since I won't be buying any more models this year, that means I have now exceeded my revised target of £750 in the New Model Fund by the end of the year!
Flushed with success I decided to immediately list some more models on eBay. I blogged about those auctions on Monday and when they finish on Sunday they will also contribute to my fund this year. I'll then have decided whether I can be bothered to list even more models before Christmas.
I can't wait until 2010 when I'll start spending all this cash!

SELLING: eBay model auctions
On Sunday I listed some more models on eBay. This is part of my final push to hit that magic £750 total for the New Model Fund by Christmas.

NEW MODEL FUND: Stick AND carrot
Just a quick update today.
I counted up some coins from my penny jar and managed to rustle up £10 toward my New Model Fund.
Of course, I should be selling some more stuff on eBay; indeed I have a handful of stuff ready and waiting to be listed but I just don't seem to be getting around to it. I need to knuckle down in the next few weeks if I want to hit my revised target of £750 by the end of the year.
I got a few comments reminding me that my NMF is there to allow me to buy new models and not to make me accumulate the maximum amount of money. This is true, but it was easy for me to forget as I am skint most of the time and in theory models should be low on my list of priorities. What I have to remember is that this is essentially free money, to be spent as I please, goddammit!
So thank you to Rogue Pom, Col. Corbane, Chris and Gamers World.

NEW MODEL FUND: Broken promises
Well, I've broken one of my New Year resolutions.
My plan was to go the whole calendar year without buying a single miniature. I had already partially broken that promise by buying Space Hulk which contains 30+ models, but hey that's a game not models as such so I was okay. Then I mail ordered some Ork stuff.
Once I had assembled my existing Ork models it became clear that I'd need to add to them to make some units legal and others viable. I therefore bought a third Meganob, with kombi shoota-scorcha, and the 'Ard boy armour pack. I plan to convert some of my existing shoota boyz to 'Ard boyz to beef up the squad.
The main reason I used mail order was to acquire the large 60mm bases I needed to complete my Deff Dread and Killa Kans. If I was going to order them why not order some other bits and pieces for my Orks?
So my NMF has reduced by £20.05, I have broken a resolution and I'm now well short of my revised £750 target for the year. I may have to eBay some more stuff in penance!

NEW MODEL FUND: Target achieved...and then some!
Over the past couple of weeks I have had numerous auctions running on eBay. I was selling lots of metal Catachan Imperial Guardsmen, Sisters of Battle, old Blood Bowl figures and some out of print Black Library books.
All of the invoices are now paid and I am just about to take the last of the items to the Post Office so I thought an update of my New Model Fund was in order.
The good news is that I've made a whopping £173.25! This brings my NMF total to a mighty £674.34. This has smashed my original £500 target and I'll now revise that target to £750 for the year.
I still have quite a few things which I need to list; some more random Imperial Guardsmen, Warhammer figures and some games magazines. I might try and auction them two per week, which was my original plan, because I didn't enjoy juggling 36 individual auctions simultaneously.
Watch this space.
Planetstrike
It's been a while since I reported back on my Planetstrike schemes.
I had £34.15 left in my kitty which came from my fantasy football winnings over the summer. I recently spent £14.70 on the Battlescape terrain piece, which looks fantastic by the way, leaving my kitty at a measly £19.45.
It's not a real problem, though, as I now have a stack of terrain to paint up. I'll keep that money to one side until the end of the project in case I need any extra bits and pieces.
I can't wait to get started.

NEW MODEL FUND: Over the line!
I'm off to Sheffield shortly to see U2 play Don Valley stadium so I thought I'd drop in for a quick update first.
I had planned on accomplishing lots of hobby related stuff on Tuesday night but in the event I felt ill and curled up on the sofa to watch Aliens for the umpteenth time. It must have been all this talk of Space Hulk which made me think of it. Cracking film.
I was out at the Newcastle match last night to see Shola Ameobi score his fourth goal in two games. At one point the crowd starting singing 'same old Shola, always scoring' and I burst out laughing. We won the match and are unbeaten so far in the Championship. Good stuff.
As I've mentioned I'm out tonight and I'm also out on the lash on Friday night back in Newcastle.
All this socialising means my battle reports, eBay selling, Planetstrike terrain and Planetary Empires painting will have to wait until this weekend. I do plan to get really stuck in on Saturday and Sunday, fitting in Inglourious Basterds and maybe a drink or two on Saturday night as well.
One thing I did manage to achieve this week was to hit the £500 target for my New Model Fund. Hurrah!

I have two options at this point; one is to revise my target up to £1000 by the end of the year and two is to start spending on models.
Of course I have made a resolution to not buy any more models this calendar year so I'll probably opt to raise my NMF total. Given that I have a load of stuff ready to hit eBay I could see an immediate boost to the Fund over the next few weeks anyway.

NEW MODEL FUND: Planetstrike goodies
I have added nothing to my New Model Fund for a few months now and this time around the story is no different. I have made some plans, though. As you can see in the photograph below I have pulled some models out of my collection ready to be flung upon eBay.
There are quite a few Catachan Imperial Guardsmen; loads of metal heavy weapons and a few plastics in the tub. I stripped these a while ago with the intention of repainting them but I'm broke and I don't have the time to paint a whole new army.
You'll also notice some Blood Bowl figures. Many of them are very old metals (lead probably) from third edition. I'm hoping the Treeman and Death Roller in particular will fetch a good price.
The last set of models are Sisters of Battle. This is an army I plan to keep but I have a few duplicate miniatures. I bought many of my Sisters models in bulk right at the end of 40k 2nd edition/start of 3rd edition, back in the day when Games Workshop had sales. I got a job lot of minis, most of which I'm keeping, but I also received four extra Sister Superiors with power weapons and three Seraphim with plasma pistols and power weapons. There is also a spare standard bearer. All of the poses are quite distinctive so I won't be able to convert them, but I could sell them singly on eBay.
In the background you can also see a couple of resin Forge World busts. I'm still torn on whether to sell them or keep them. They were prizes I won in tournaments and my girlfriend is quite insistent I paint them up and display them. My point of view is that they are pretty rare so may fetch a good price and I don't have the time to paint them up anyway. Hmmm, I'll have a ponder.
I hope to put all the models up for sale on eBay in the next two weeks or so.

Since then I have also purchased the Imperial Strongpoint boxed set, the Skyshield landing pad and the Blastscape craters.
By my reckoning I now have £34.15 left to spend on Planetstrike stuff.
Destroy the Gargant
For those of you who missed it, I posted my third game from my Destroy the Gargant campaign yesterday. Here it is in all its glory; a clash between my Daemonhunters and Gary's Orks.

NEW MODEL FUND: Quick update
I was pondering my New Model Fund this morning and rereading some of my previous blog entries and discovered that I had put a few items up for sale on eBay, sold a couple and then forgot to add the cash to my fund.
I sold an old Eldar codex and a writing magazine and pulled in £14.49. I've added this to the totals in the right column.
I'll be back with a proper New Model Fund update next month.

NEW MODEL FUND: Plans and schemes
I still haven't gotten around to selling anything on eBay as I have been trying to finish off my Blood Angels army ahead of Planetstrike. In my last NMF update I mentioned I had won £150 and would put this toward Planetstrike purchases.
Well, the book was released last weekend and I bought it, along with the limited edition mines, bombs and booby traps. The Skyshield landing pad was also released but that will keep; I'll buy it along with the larger boxed sets of bastions and defence lines later on.
So out of the £150 kitty I have spent £26.75 and have£123.25 left.
Since my last NMF post GW have also announced that there will be a further Battlescape scenery piece with a ruined Rhino buried into some craters, surrounded by shredded trees. It looks great and I'd like to pick once of those up too.
With that in mind, here's what else I plan to purchase:
I've been looking at my finances in a more general sense recently and they don't make for great reading. Despite my economy drives over the past eighteen months or so my situation is still a little precarious.
Because gaming is a luxury and not a necessity it will be one of my first activities to feel the pinch. I really need to buckle down and sell some of my stockpile of models in the coming months to make a dent in my debts.
It also means I may have to sell some models I had previously planned on keeping. Prime candidates are the Catachans I recently stripped. I found I had more of the models than I had thought, many of them metal, and they may bring some much needed cash in. If things get really desperate I may have to sell a painted army too, but that will be a last resort.
Of course any money I make will still go into the NMF but as I have made a resolution not to buy any models this year the fund is largely notional at the moment. Once my finances are back in order I plan to cash in the fund and buy big!

NEW MODEL FUND: Devious plans
I have bad news and good news.
The bad news is that I have added nothing to the New Model Fund through eBay sales since my last update a month or so ago. I've just been so busy with painting and modelling that I haven't had the time. At least I haven't bought any models so the fund hasn't depleted.
The good news is that I won second place in my works fantasy football league and pocketed £150 for my efforts. Nice.
As I mentioned in my previous NMF blog post I plan to spend a lot of this cash on Planetstrike goodies. This will make a refreshing change for me in comparison to my previous gaming habits.
For many years I just bought stuff willy nilly, with no structure to my purchases. As a result I've ended up with a truly staggering number of models across a number of factions and game systems. I've been trying to reduce my spending on gaming over the past few years (for as long as this blog has been running) as well as trying to discipline my purchases, and therefore I've been behind the curve on most Games Workshop expansions.
I just couldn't afford the Cities of Death terrain nor did I have the time to dedicate to it so it passed me by, despite my passion for it. This happened again with Apocalypse which I love the concept of but I just haven't been able to sink any time or money into it. I did put a couple of superheavies together but it's now two years after the initial release and I still haven't played a single game.
The problem is that to get the most out of these expansions I'd need to be in a position to spend some money on terrain and/or models when they are released and I'd need to dedicate some time to preparing and playing them.
I'm really skint at the moment so finding money to spend on new models and terrain is a real problem. It's even harder to justify when I have a lead pile that would probably reach from the Earth to the Moon if the models were laid end to end! My solution has therefore been to stop spending money on new models and concentrate all my efforts into completing what I have. A very sensible aim, but...
I'm probably unusual amongst gamers in that once I've set myself a task I find it very difficult to break from it. I don't hop from one project to the next, starting one army then dropping it in favour of another on a whim. I'm very focused and don't like to go back on promises I've made to myself or to others.
At the moment I'm locked into a cycle of finishing a full army of each 40k faction every year. While this is a good way of reducing my backlog of models and saving me some cash at the same time, it always causes me a dilemma when an expansion comes out. Do I abandon my project partway through to concentrate on the expansion or do I stick with my plan? Do I spend some cash I don't have in order to jump on board? It doesn't help that I'm a slow painter so I find it difficult to keep up with the pace anyway.
All of which is a rather long winded way to get to the point where I can explain how the stars have aligned for me in relation to the Planetstrike expansion.
The first is cash. I suddenly have £150 I didn't have before and it isn't allocated to anything else. I can spend it on whatever I like. Guilt free money comes along so infrequently for me that it is always a major event!
The second is that my current project, painting 2000 points of Blood Angels, is almost complete. I just have two units left to finish and that is very achievable in the few weeks before the release of Planetstrike. My next project will be Orks, which I will start on soon after my marines are done but I anticipate that they will be a far easier army to paint. I'll be painting Goff Orks and I won't be lavishing the detail on them that I have done on my Blood Angels. Even if I lose a month or two at the start of the project while I get Planetstrike done I should easily be able to complete them on time. So I'm going to have some time.
The third thing in my favour is my gaming table. I built it using foam inside a wooden frame so that I could carve out terrain like rivers, a beach and a trench system. I finished three out of the four boards and they have served me well for years. I flocked them green so I could use them for WFB or 40k. I never did get round to finishing the trench board but I had promised myself I would when I completed my Blood Angels. You can see the table in this battle report.
Lo and behold, years later, Games Workshop release Planetstrike with a plethora of terrain such as bunkers, barricades, craters and minefields which will go perfectly with my trench system. I could even add the trenches to my existing boards to make an eight foot by four foot table and play an Apocalypse game on there. The new expansion will give me the kick I need to finish my board and terrain. It might even get me playing some actual games again.

I'll be painting Goff Orks and I won't be lavishing the detail on them that I have done on my Blood Angels. Even if I lose a month or two at the start of the project while I get Planetstrike done I should easily be able to complete them on time. So I'm going to have some time.
The third thing in my favour is my gaming table. I built it using foam inside a wooden frame so that I could carve out terrain like rivers, a beach and a trench system. I finished three out of the four boards and they have served me well for years. I flocked them green so I could use them for WFB or 40k. I never did get round to finishing the trench board but I had promised myself I would when I completed my Blood Angels. You can see the table in this battle report.
Lo and behold, years later, Games Workshop release Planetstrike with a plethora of terrain such as bunkers, barricades, craters and minefields which will go perfectly with my trench system. I could even add the trenches to my existing boards to make an eight foot by four foot table and play an Apocalypse game on there. The new expansion will give me the kick I need to finish my board and terrain. It might even get me playing some actual games again.

NEW MODEL FUND: Pennies from heaven
I haven't spotted any exciting news or rumours over the past week so tonight you get an update on my New Model Fund instead.
I have some eBay auctions up at the moment here. Of possible interest to readers of this blog will be the Wolf Riders anthology, published in 1989 and now long out of print, and the 2nd edition Eldar codex dated 1994. I'm not sure how much these auctions will fetch but at least I have something up for sale.
Despite not selling anything in four weeks I have added to the fund. I banked £11 from my penny jar early in the month. Hey ho, it all adds up.
I've nothing to add to my model wishlist this month as I already had all the new Imperial Guard models on there. I do fancy some plastic though.
Games Workshop are keeping a very tight lid on the Planetstrike expansion considering it is due for release in six or seven weeks, but news of the fortifications terrain has leaked out and I'm very interested. Because they are terrain rather than models and I have had a half finished trench board for years and because I'm hoping to come into a little cash shortly I plan on opening my wallet for a change.
I'm second in my works Fantasy Football league you see and if I'm still there in two weeks time when the season ends I'll win a cool £150. That'll be my budget for Planetstrike which should arrive just as I finish my Blood Angels army, meaning I'll have the time to finish it immediately and it should make an interesting set of articles for this blog.

NEW MODEL FUND: On Guard
This will be a worthwhile update for the New Model Fund.
I recently sold all of my Praetorian Imperial Guard via eBay and they pulled in a whopping £207.72. Remember I also sold some models previously in a private sale for £45 so the whole force netted me over £250. Result!
That means my New Model Fund now stands at a mighty £464.60, less than £50 short of my target of £500 for the entire year. It also means that I have raked in an impressive £1001.72 from eBay sales since January 2007 when I started the fund.
The fact that I sold these models also addressed one of the New Year resolutions that I was failing at; selling stuff on eBay. I hope to keep up the selling over the coming months.

NEW MODEL FUND: I have...er...what's the word...amnesia!
I'm getting very forgetful in my old age. The first thing I've forgotten to blog about is my New Model Fund - this post is over a week late. That's partly because not much has happened on this front lately. I haven't gotten back into the routine of putting up eBay auctions since Christmas. I will get round to it shortly, though, in time for the Imperial Guard codex release.
So what have I been up to? Well, I decided to make some changes to the fund. As you may have noticed already I have posted up the current fund in my sidebar so that it will always be visible, much like my painting score for the year. That means my monthly updates will talk about what I've bought and sold during the past four weeks as well as showing you my wish list of models.

NEW MODEL FUND: Insert witty pun here
One of my New Year resolutions regarding my New Model Fund was to sell two items per week on eBay. I haven't kept that resolution at all but I have managed to add £51 to my fund. I sold a handful of Praetorian Imperial Guard in a private sale and the rest came from my penny jar.
I still plan to keep my resolution in the long term as I'll put stuff up for auction at the rate of four or six items per week until I catch up. Fortunately I have kept the other main promise to not buy any new models. My resolve will be tested to the limit in the coming months as the Imperial Guard models are rolled out. So to sate my desires by proxy, and to give me something to look forward to, I plan to keep a list of the models I want as they are released. It will no doubt include the Stompa and Valkyrie, but what else will appear on it by the end of 2009?
Anyhoo, here's how my New Model Fund stands today:

NEW MODEL FUND: Reaches its Zenith
I had a stellar run on the items I sold on eBay before Christmas. They were mainly graphic novels, collected works from 2000AD. The best sellers were three Zenith books. I hadn't realised that due to legal problems none of the books had been reprinted since I'd picked them up in the early nineties and they were therefore as rare as hen's teeth.
Altogether I raked in £116.33. Sweet.

NEW MODEL FUND: The model crunch
The fourth and final instalment of my New Year introspective concerns my New Model Fund. It has been the one part of my gaming life that has been an unqualified success.
Plastic crack
I began the fund in January 2007 as a way to control my spending on models or 'plastic crack' as they are sometimes known. I had an absolute stack of unpainted models already so I pledged to only buy new models with the money I made from selling stuff on eBay (and the money from my penny jar). In the two years the fund has been running I have generated an income of £626.67 and spent £537.12 on models, leaving me with a healthy profit of £89.55.
I still plan to put two items up for sale on eBay per week in 2009 but my new pledge is to refrain from buying a single model in 2009. Impossible I hear you cry (and my inner geek whimpers in sympathy).
I'm sure there will be many models released in 2009 that I would really like to own - the plastic Stompa I already know about and loads of new Imperial Guard models are rumoured - but do I really need them? Couldn't I just add them to a wish list while I get on with painting the models that have been hidden away in boxes for years?
If I can keep this crazy resolution it should have three major benefits; it will save me money while the credit crunch bites, it will reduce my painting 'to do' pile significantly and it will help me keep focus on painting the models for the armies I want to play.
My plan on the painting front, as I have mentioned in an earlier blog, is to paint up 2000 points of Blood Angels and then start my Ork army. I already have all the models I need anyway - I just need to knuckle down and paint them!
If I can resist the impulse to buy the Shiny New Thing in 2009 I will hopefully appreciate the models all the more when I finally buy them in 2010. And I'm sure some of the 'must have' models will drop off my list as the novelty wears off and other models are released.
Another way to decrease my 'to paint' pile, and boost my income to boot, is to sell some of my unpainted models. Obvious initial candidates are my Praetorian Imperial Guard. I've been dithering about selling or keeping these models for as long as I've had my blog but I really need to get them up for sale. Am I really going to paint them up when I already own Cadians and Renegade Imperial Guard? Not likely. I'll probably offload my Catachans for the same reasons.
I plan to keep the money in my New Model Fund to one side, at least notionally, during 2009 so that I have a healthy profit for 2010. This could open up the possibility of some serious spending like splashing out on an entire new army or buying some big Forge World kits (Reaver Titan anyone?). At the absolute minimum I want at least £500 in my New Model Fund for 2010.
Of course I might be so taken with my pledge that I might carry it on for another year...

The games keep coming thick and fast. This was a game against Jamie's well painted and modelled Eldar Ulthwé Strike Force army, an army that is now defunct (it was originally released as part of the Eye of Terror codex). Scope it out here.

NEW MODEL FUND: Gold Library
In my last financial round-up I mentioned I would try to put some stuff up for sale on eBay to build up my kitty for new models. I followed through with that promise and listed three items; two graphic novels and a Black Library background book. I was amazed as the bids came whizzing in and the Sabbat Worlds Crusade book in particular raked in an impressive haul. I made £74.89 in just one week.

That made me rifle through my other books for similar items and I came up with nine things; eight more graphic novels and another Black Library background book. You can check everything out here. I'm hoping I can add a substantial sum to my war chest by this time next week.
So how does my fund stand at the moment?

NEW MODEL FUND:
I haven't reported on my New Model Fund for over two months. That's because I've been trying to tighten my belt and concentrate on painting the models I already own, rather than buying new ones.
I did indulge over the weekend, though. The first model I picked up was Chaplain Lemartes for my Blood Angels. I wanted to field him in my 1000 point Gauntlet tournament list so I dropped £10 on him, but he arrived two weeks late. Ah well, I would have bought him eventually anyway. I now have the full set of Blood Angel Characters. It's just a shame he is such an ugly model. I may have to take the modelling knife to him before I break out the paint brushes.
The second set of models I bought were the new plastic Marauder horsemen. In contrast to the skull-faced goon Lemartes these models look very impressive. The light cavalry will replace the Furies in my old Hordes of Chaos list, and although they won't do it quite so well, they will be tasked to hunt enemy mages, war machines and other light cavalry. The other reason I got these models versus the new plastic Knights or Warhounds is that the latter are included in the new Warriors of Chaos battalion box (it comes with 12 Warriors, 20 Marauders, 10 Warhounds and 5 Knights). I'm sure to pick this set up in the near future to thicken my core units.
So lets take a look at what that £22 spent has done to my fund.
That's great, but the disappointing thing is that I haven't managed to sell anything over the last couple of months. Of course this isn't helped by my hectic schedule but I had hoped to sell just two items a week consistently. That wouldn't have taken up too much of my precious time but it would have kept the pennies rolling in.
I won't be any less busy in the run up to Christmas but I will try to list a few things in order to save up for that battalion box. Alternatively, or in addition to that, I'll have to ask relatives to get me some models as Christmas presents, which won't count against my fund.

NEW MODEL FUND: Brass in pocket
I'm back in profit.
I scraped together £16 from my penny jar and sales of my mobile phone and SLR camera brought in just over £70 so, coupled with the fact I didn't buy any more models, I now have a healthy £36 in the kitty.
I'll need some cash in the near future when the new Warhammer Warriors of Chaos book is released. The plastic wolves and Marauder cavalry look great and a plastic chariot will be a must for me. The two new metal Lords look awesome too. An last but not least, I really want to bust out a Dragon. If no new model is released I may have to convert a High Elf plastic one.
