APOCALYPSE: Blood Angels updated

With the current batch of painting of my Blood Angels coming to an end it's time to update my Apocalypse army list for them. Please bear in mind that many of the models listed below go back as far as Rogue Trader days and I wouldn't normally even consider playing them in a normal game. Of course in Apocalypse games all bets are off...

HQ
  • Dante 200 points
  • Mephiston 225 points
  • Lemartes 125 points
  • Tycho 110 points
  • Corbulo 100 points

  • Predator Destructor, heavy bolters and storm bolter 100 points
  • Land Raider, storm bolter 255 points
  • Land Raider Crusader, storm bolter 255 points
  • Total 610 points
Total Points: 4955

Looking at the totals for each category I can see that my army is very unbalanced with loads of HQ and Elite choices but very little of anything else. I guess that means that this army would excel at attacking in Planetstrike missions. I wouldn't fancy defending though!

I still have a pile of models I need to paint which would help to re-balance the army; 20 or so Tactical marines and a Whirlwind would flesh out my Troop and Heavy Support options nicely. Of course the 16 Scouts, two Captains and another Chaplain would knock it straight back out of whack...

My current wishlist includes Baal Predators, lots of Tac squads with Rhinos, Razorbacks and Drop Pods, Veterans and Honour Guard.

I have heard rumors that the Blood Angels will get a new codex sometime in 2010 so now will be as good a time as any to put away the paintbrush and wait to see how the army will be affected by Games Workshop's update.

But if an Apocalypse game does come calling in the meantime I'll have almost 5000 points of Blood Angels to command.

Destroy the Gargant
I've just posted up the second battle report from my Destroy the Gargant campaign. This time my Daemonhunters took centre stage to beat back Gary's Orks as they tried to infiltrate the Ork camp.

PAINTING: The thin red line

As promised yesterday, here are the photographs of my finished 2000 point Blood Angels army.

Doesn't look much for a years work does it?

Terminator squad Kalastin with their new Land Raider Crusader ride.

Chaplain Lemartes with Chaplain Diavolo in the background.

Techmarine Kadeon with servitors.

Of course, I already had some models painted before I started the challenge. I'm guessing that by adding two more dreadnoughts, the Predator and four special characters the total army comes in at over 3000 points. I'll know for sure when I rewrite my Apocalypse army list and update it on my blog later this weekend.

Destroy the Gargant
I posted the introduction to this campaign yesterday and today I'm posting the first game. It was so long ago I can't actually remember if it was played in 3rd or 4th edition 40k. Anyway, check out my DH/IG taking on Gary's Orks.

PAINTING: Crusader on the way

With some hard graft over the weekend my Land Raider Crusader is almost finished.

I painted all of the sub-assemblies separately first and the attached them to the hull. That included the tracks, Hurricane bolters and all the hatches and weapons. When it came to painting the hull I ran out of Blood Angel Red and had to buy a new pot. Despite four or five coats of paint the finish is not as smooth as the spray colour on my other vehicles. If I paint more vehicles in the future I may have to invest in an airbrush.

The model feels strangely weighted with all the bits in place; the Hurricane bolters are really heavy and are on the outermost parts of the tank while the centre is lightweight plastic. I reckon the whole thing would fall to pieces if I had to transport it somewhere.

All that is left to paint on the hull are the lenses and viewing plates, a layer of extreme highlights and then some weathering. I also need to add the assault cannons and frag launchers.

I hope to have this model finished by the end of this week.

PAINTING: This n that

I haven't got nearly as much painting done as I had hoped, partly due to bad planning and partly because I'm not in the mood. I have a day off work and painting is meant to be fun and relaxing so when it feels like an effort I don't want to push myself.

Even so, I have painted something.

First up are the armour plates for the Hurricane Bolters. The iconography is my usual Snakebite Leather, Desert Yellow, Bleached Bone combo with a wash of Gryphonne Sepia and then some Skull White highlights. I still need to paint the recesses and then touch up the red. I'll probably paint the top and bottom bits in a metallic colour too.

I also spent some time on the gunner.

I wish I'd painted him in separate bits because I had a devil of a job getting in to all the nooks and crannies. I highlighted the red up from Blood Red through Blazing Orange to Fiery Orange. To set the gunner apart from the vehicle I highlighted him again with Skull White mixed into the Fiery Orange.

As I wanted to make progress with my Blood Angels but I wasn't feeling creative I decided to undercoat my Lemartes model and paint his base. It was a quick job but still needed doing.

While I was painting his base my mind turned to the other Blood Angels character models I have. I've put them to one side because they are already painted, albeit to a comparatively low standard. Nevertheless they were still usable in games so I thought I was better off concentrating on my unpainted models first. Their bases were painted green rather than the brown my new Blood Angels are based with now, so I thought I'd bring them up to date.

So, I didn't finish my Land Raider but at least I have something to show for the day.

PAINTING: Blood Angels army 1600 points

First things first - I've painted the tracks on my Land Raider Crusader and here is the proof:

I'm still struggling with my photography, especially with the light. At one point I had the blind pulled up on my window, two lights pointing at my models and the room light on and the camera was still telling me I needed the flash!

It's clear I need to get some seriously powerful lights but for now I'll have to struggle on.

Terminators
I'm really pleased with the finished Terminator squad.

I painted some black around the building ruins on the bases to help them to stand out. I still might go back to them in the future.

I haven't varnished the models yet as I plan to paint some heraldry on the shields.

I've also left space on the fists to add detail later if I want to.

Pretty good for starter models out of the Black Reach boxed set.

Dreadnought Eluvies
Again this model comes from the Black Reach boxed set, but I modified it to carry an assault cannon.

This model painted up very quickly and I'm happy with the finish.

The fluff I'm developing for the Dreadnought is that he was a former Terminator, hence the black powerfist.

You can clearly see my assault cannon conversion in the photo above. What do you think?

I was very happy with the base too. As it's my third Dreadnought it had to be different from the other two which have the standard plastic base.

Army shot
These are all of the Blood Angels I've painted since August last year.

Of course I have a few more models I already had painted since before the challenge, such as my Predator, Furioso Dreadnought, melt Dreadnought, etc. If I get the chance I might take a photograph with everything together.

PAINTING AND MODELLING: Decals

To do list:
  • DONE - Convert and post up another battle report
  • DONE - Complete my Dreadnought conversion
  • DONE - Undercoat the interior of my Land Raider Crusader
  • DONE - Start stripping my plastic Catachans
  • DONE - Sort out my podcasts on iTunes
  • DONE - Check my IG listings on eBay and link to the auction from this blog
  • Paint the metallics on my Terminators
  • DONE - Apply transfers to my Techmarine and Death Company
  • Sort out my Blood Angels photographs on Picasa

I've finished adding transfers to my Techmarine and Death Company.

The Techmarine was tricky because I needed a Blood Angel chapter badge but due to the detailing on the shoulder pad it had to be smaller than the ones I usually use. I dug around my bag of decals and finally found the yellow one you can see on the pic. I had also decided I need a transfer on his kneepad but this was a smaller space again. I've put a transfer on there from my first edition Space Marines - a tiny Blood Angels blood drop and wings surrounded by a black circle. It was still a bit big and I had trouble curling it round the pad so I just hope it sticks!

Rather predictably I added lots of skulls to the Death Company as well as a campaign badge to the Chaplain. I figured the Death Company wouldn't have campaign badges because their armour has been overpainted just before the battle and they wouldn't be expected to survive long enough to need one.

And that's it from me today. I didn't get round to painting my Terminators or sorting out my photos on Picasa but I have finished off a lot of those niggly little things on the list so I'm happy enough.

The Chinese food is ordered, I'm going to open a bottle of wine and watch some telly.

GENERAL: Spray away

To do list:
  • Convert and post up another battle report
  • Complete my Dreadnought conversion
  • DONE - Undercoat the interior of my Land Raider Crusader
  • Start stripping my plastic Catachans
  • Sort out my podcasts on iTunes
  • Check my IG listings on eBay and link to the auction from this blog
  • Paint the metallics on my Terminators
  • Apply transfers to my Techmarine and Death Company
  • Sort out my Blood Angels photographs on Picasa
Here's the proof.

I used Halford's white primer for the interior rather than Game's Workshop's own brand Skull White. It was £6.99 for 500ml instead of £8 for 400ml. I had to spray indoors because it is so windy outside and then had to open a window to get rid of the fumes. I think this has roughed up the undercoat a little. It's not bad though, and will certainly be good enough for a quick paintjob on the inside of the vehicle.

I wasn't brave enough to buy the black car primer at the same time so I plumped for my regular GW Chaos Black. I used this on the engine block and again it didn't dry smoothly. Again, I can live with it.

I've put the Land Raider sprues back in the box for now and update you on the painting of it soon. But now, on to my podcasts.

PAINTING: 'Blood Angels to me!'

I've just posted up my contribution to month eight of the Warseer Tale of 40k Painters challenge. As part of the Tale you have to post up a shot of the newly painted unit along with the rest of your growing army. You've already seen the Techmarine I painted up so here are the group shots.

1235 points of bad ass Blood Angels

Of course I have more models than this painted for the whole army as I started it before the challenge; units such as my Death Company Furioso Dreadnought, my Razorback and some character models. All or some of these may get revisited at some point in the future so that they match my current paint scheme.

Chaaaaarrrge!

You can just see my Terminators at the back of the pic above. I've already started on the bases of these guys and they will be my next unit in the challenge. They weigh in at somewhere close to 250 points and will get me back on target for that 2000 point total if I finish them by the end of the month.

I've fallen a bit behind schedule, you see, largely because I had to play a joker and not submit anything for one month. I also lost some painting time by painting up five Death Company marines that contribute zero points to my army total. So I need to paint up over 200 points worth of models every month to stay the pace.

Failure is not an option!

Hitting the wall
I've really been enjoying my painting recently but I've been finding it a real struggle to get the time to do it. Work is tough at the moment meaning late finishes and weekend working and when I do have the time to paint I'm too physically and mentally drained to do it. I'm also trying to get fit so I'm getting up at six each morning and hitting the gym before work even starts. Crazy I know but hopefully I'll see some decent results for the summer.

All this means that something has to give and unfortunately it is going to be my Tuesday gaming nights with Gary. I've put things on hold for a couple of months to see how things go. I'll certainly be done with my gym blitz by then and if I paint instead of play on a Tuesday night this should hopefully give me enough time to get on top of my painting for the challenge. Perhaps it will get the painting bug out of my system too and I'll be raring to play some games.

Battle report
Speaking of games I have recently posted a 5th edition battle report on my other blog. This is what will turn out to be the last game against Gary for quite a while. Again it saw my Daemonhunter army with Imperial Guard allies take on Gary's growing Chaos Daemon horde. Read it here.

PAINTING: Ten bad Ass marines

I've finally completed my Assault squad, taken some half decent photos and put them forward for the Warseer Tale of 40k painters painting pledge.

I've already described how I painted the models in an earlier blog entry so I'll just let the pictures do the talking now.

Cast out the daemon...
The eagled eyed among you may have spotted that I posted up a battle report on my other blog yesterday. It was my first game of 40k 5th edition using my Imperial Guard and Daemonhunters. If you voted that I use these armies for the next few months then you might want to read on here.

PAINTING AND MODELLING: Complete Ass

The Blood Angels Assault Squad is complete!

I've been very busy at work this week, finishing late and working six days, so my free time was severely restricted. I had a direct choice to make between updating my blog and painting my models. I went for the models.

I took a leaf out of my own book and painted in short bursts each night. One night I finished the Sergeant's power sword. The next I highlighted the helmets. On the third night I detailed the helmets. The fourth I highlighted the jump pack harnesses and weapons. Next I painted the barbed wire and added it to the bases. The plasma pistols came next. Today I painted the melta-bomb on the Sergeant.

Individually, each step seems insignificant but by doing a task each day at least I felt like I was making progress. And here I am with a finished unit.

So with the Assault Squad done I began to put together my Dreadnought.

It's the Dread from the Assault on Black Reach boxed set. I already own a Blood Angel specific Dreadnought armed with a multi-melta and storm bolter so I decided I would hack up this plastic version to give it an Assault cannon and heavy flamer. You can see from the photo that so far I have removed the multi-melta barrels and replaced them with an assault cannon from an old Baal predator. My next task will be to detail the rest of the arm with an ammo feed and something to disguise the multi-melta ammunition.

Going berzerk
I've written up another battle report from 40k 4th edition involving my Imperial Guard. It was a 1500 point games against Gary's Khorne Berzerker Chaos Space Marine army. It was a bit of an experiment for me as I tried out the drop troops doctrine for the first time.

PAINTING: Get ready to Assault

Despite the fact that they are unfinished, I've submitted my Assault squad to the Tale of 40k Painters pledge on Warseer.

According to the rules of the challenge I can do this to avoid having to use a joker (I only have one left for the next six months). It means you can make progress on large models or units a bit at a time. It's the one upside to the sheer cost of the Assault Marines in the Blood Angels codex. When this squad is finished it will cost a whopping 300 points!

I'm hopeful that I'll finish the squad entirely during my next painting session which will probably be in around two weeks time. Then I'll move on to either my Terminators or Captain. My Land Raider Crusader will follow shortly after them. That will hopefully take me a lot closer to the 2000 point target of my pledge.

I just need to knuckle down and get some painting done.

Guard conflict rumbles on
I'm still ploughing through my old Imperial Guard battle reports and you can read my latest instalment here. This was another game against Gary's Chaos Space Marine army when he brought his newly painted Obliterators (which, due to a strange quirk of fate, now reside in my own Chaos Space Marine army).

PAINTING: Black, like death

I've really struggled to blackline these fellas without a decent light. The winter light is failing and I only have my energy saving main light and a small desk lamp for illumination. The replacement lamp is too small to have on the desk so I have it perched up over my right shoulder on a bookshelf. The problem with this is that it creates very strong shadows on the models so I have to sit at a very unnatural angle and keep moving the model around to see everything. I wish I lived in LA.

Anyway, I have blacklined the cracks and crevices in the armour as best I can and painted the jump pack harnesses black. These five models are now in the same state as my first five. I'll try and highlight the black next, if my pot of Chaos Black paint holds out - it's almost empty.

Food and Drink: Water, Vitamin C, Probiotic Yoghurt, Appl, Chicken and coleslaw sandwich, crisps, chocolate, a big mug of tea

PAINTING: Third and final highlight

I've completed the third and final highlight on the armour. It was a50/50 mix of Fiery Orange and Skull White. It probably looks a little too much at the moment but I will go back over the armour with Blood Red to tidy everything up.

Right after I took this photograph my table lamp collapsed all over the models. I haven't found any obvious damage yet but one model was catapulted into my wet paint. Most of the paint went on the bolt pistol but very little damage was done. Lucky, I guess but now I don't have a lamp to help pick out those fine details. I'll soldier on.

PAINTING: Highlights, the second

The second set of highlights are now done. I hope you can see the difference!

One more set of highlights to go and then I'll take a break for lunch.

Food and Drink: Water, Vitamin C, Probiotic Yoghurt, Apple

PAINTING: First highlights

I've finished the first set of armour highlights. It took about an hour and a half to get some Blazing Orange on all the hard edges. The next step is some Fiery Orange over that.

Podcasts listened to: This Week in Wargaming, Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's Film Reviews
Food and Drink: Water, Vitamin C, Probiotic Yoghurt

PAINTING: Starters orders

Today will be a day when I get things done.

I have a day off work and I know I'll have little time over the coming week to dedicate to gaming so I need to get as much done now as I can. So, at 8:30 in the morning, I'm sat at my painting station reading to start!

My rather ambitious plan is to completely finish all ten of my Assault marines today. I need to finish the armour and paint the black details on five of them just to bring them up to the level of the first five, then I need to paint the yellow helmets, the kneepads, highlight the weapons and finish the bases on all ten.

When they're all done I need to take a decent photo of them and put it on Warseer to fulfill this month's painting pledge. If I can do it it will add 300 or so much needed points to my current total of 735 points and therefore take me over the halfway mark with six months of the pledge remaining.

I plan to keep posting my progress on the blog every few hours to keep myself motivated.

And here we go...

PAINTING AND MODELLING: Heavy assault

I had a few hours to dedicate to my Blood Angels yesterday. I had already put together my scenic Terminator bases so I decided to stick the Assault on Black Reach Terminators on there.

The more observant of you will have noticed that there are six Terminators rather than five. The last guy on the right came free on the front of White Dwarf and I only remembered I had him when I was halfway through assembling the other models. Of course the Blood Angel codex only allows Terminator squad sizes of five models, unlike the Space Marine codex which allows the player to add extra models at 40 points a pop. Grrr!

I'll still paint him up as in future versions of the rules my BA may be allowed variable size squads again or I could swap him out for the assault cannon Terminator if I want.

Speaking of the assault cannon, this is a very straightforward weapon swap. I had originally tried to fit an old Baal Predator assault cannon on the model to make a meaty Assault cannon but I couldn't figure out a way to build a convincing harness around the arm. Instead I found a really old assault cannon arm and simply glued that on as it was. This bit is so I old I think it's actually lead - it certainly feels very soft and bends relatively easily. The gun itself is smaller than I would have liked but I was pleasantly surprised that the hand was the same size as the new Terminators. The arm itself sits further down the arm so I had to build it up a little to get it right. To help disguise the join, and to bulk the model up a little bit, I added a shield above the cannon.

I plan to paint these models next, right after my Assault squad.

I had hoped that it would only take about an hour or so to finish the Terminators but it took closer to three, so I had little time to devote to my Assault squad.

Still, as you can hopefully see in the photo, I have managed to finally get the last highlight onto the armour. The next step for these five models is to paint all the black details such as the jump pack harnesses and weapons.

Turn by turn action
I ported over a couple more Imperial Guard battle reports yesterday in between modelling projects. The first of these is a turn by turn report of a 2000 point game against Gary's Biel-Tan Eldar. Scope it out here.

PAINTING AND MODELLING: Black Reach and Battle for MaCragge

Some time off work and feeling energised following the completion of my Praying Mantis Superheavy have combined to produce a spurt of modelling and painting creativity in me. Here's what's on my workbench.

The pledge
The main thing I need to get cracking on is painting my Blood Angels. I'm a little behind in my painting pledge over on Warseer (although I have eventually managed to get my Chaplain and Death Company on there).

My target for the end of January is to complete this 10 man Assault Squad. It has two plasma pistols and the Veteran Sergeant has a power weapon and melta bombs. It would count as a hefty 300 points towards my 2000 point army and would also be great on the tabletop as they count as Troops in a Blood Angels army.

They were already painted up to a very basic standard, essentially with just the base colours, so the first thing I did was to wash the yellow helmets with Gryphonne Sepia and wash the armour with Baal Red. I took the photo while the ink was still wet, so while it was drying I busied myself with some base building.

Captain Lazarus
The Black Reach boxed set has been cluttering up my games room for a while now, stuffed with new models for my Blood Angels and Orks. I decided to take the models from the box and put together the Marines both to save some space and to give me something to paint later in the year. The fist model I put together was the Commander.

This model is a stunning sculpt for a snap fit. It only consists of four components; the legs and back, the torso and head, the sword arm and the backpack and standard. I put it together as it was, without conversion. I didn't mind the lack of a jump pack or bike because it will fit into my mechanised Blood Angels just fine - he'll be deployed in a Rhino, Razorback or Land Raider.

More problematic is his weapon loadout. The power weapon is fine but the boltgun is a problem. Can you believe that the Blood Angel codex doesn't allow a Captain to have a boltgun? I'll have to ponder my options; I could count it as a storm bolter or bolt pistol or I could take a knife to the model. The problem with that is the way the model is carrying the gun. I can't just cut it off his hand because he's holding it underneath and it's all molded together into his hand, arm and hip. Aaaarggghhh! Anyone got any ideas?

Terminator Squad Sanctarin
The next model I took off the sprue was the Terminator Sergeant. You might be able to make him out at the front of the group shot. As I was cleaning him up I remembered that the Terminators now come on the larger bases and I had lots of resin basing bits that would fit on there perfectly. So I stopped putting the model together and created the five Terminator bases.

Dreadnought Osiander
Since I already had all my basing gear out I cast about for other stuff to base. I had an even bigger piece of resin which fit onto the Dreadnought base perfectly.

What are we fighting for?
Next I dug out some objective markers which originate from the previous 40k boxed set. They aren't the best objective markers, and they aren't themed specifically for my Blood Angels but they are better than using a die. They should paint up very quickly too.

Okay, the ink on my Assault Squad should have dried by now so I'm off to start detailing them.

Back through the mists of time
My latest Imperial Guard battle report was a game against my gaming nemesis Gary. He was trying out his Eldar ahead of the Gauntlet Tournament 2004.

Yep, 2004.

Please remember that these battle reports have all been republished from my old, defunct website so are from 40k third and fourth edition. That's why the army lists may seem a bit odd, the tactics are strange and rules may be off. It's not my bad gameplay, honest!

PAINTING: Painting pledge month 4

Here is my contribution to month four of the Tale of 40k Painters painting pledge (try saying that fast). I actually painted these models a while ago for the Gauntlet tournament but I held them back so I didn't exceed my monthly points limit on the pledge. That meant I could spend a little time painting my Brass Scorpion instead, but it will be back to the Blood Angels from now on.

The photographs aren't great because the light was terrible (ahh - British winters) and the flash which I had to use has made the highlights super harsh. Anyway, enough of the excuses, here are the Death Company.

Drum roll please...

Chaplain and five Death Company marines

Although I own ten Death Company models I chose to paint just five and the Chaplain. This would give me a legal squad, would make it easier for me to allocate points to the challenge and allow me to paint each type of marine in their own batch. Five of my Death Company marines came from second edition while five were the newer Death Company models. I went with the older batch of models first. They have metal bodies with plastic arms. There are lots and lots of little conversions on the models which I did many moons ago.

Chaplain Diavolo

The Chaplain was a newer addition to the unit, chosen when I got rid of my Death Company rhino and switched to jump packs in 3rd edition. I didn't want to cut up my old Chaplain Avernus so I had to make a new one. For some reason I gave him a plasma pistol which is not very useful in the game. Ho hum.

Death Company marine with powerfist

This model has had a skull cut in half and moulded onto his shoulder pad. He also carries a powerfist which just represents rending in the current rules.

Death Company marine with powerfist

Another powerfist which was really nasty in previous editions. He has bones glued in a cross on his shoulder pad.

Death Company marine with power axe

This marine has had skeleton arms attached to his own power armoured arms.

Death Company marine with powersword

You can see the bone additions really clearly on this guy.

Death Company marine with chainsword

Anyone remember hand flamers?

Four month group shot

Wow, the models are starting to look like an army now. I haven't varnished these guys yet following last month's frosting disaster. I hope to write an article on the whole frosting phenomenon at some point and I'll probably do my Death Company for that.

I'm not happy with the photographs at all, but I hope to remedy this by next month. Speaking of next month I need to decide on what to paint. Assault marines are high on my list as they count towards the Troops choices of my army and can thus claim objectives.
